From Jose Saramago's notebook

As he says, his spiritual family:
  • Camoes, because all Portugese roads lead to him
  • Father Antonio Vieira, because the Portugese language was never more beautiful than when this Jesuit was writing it.
  • Cervantes, because without the author of Quixote the Iberian peninsula would be a house without a roof
  • Montaigne, because he did not need Freud to know who he was
  • Voltaire, because he lost all illusions about humanity and managed to survive his disgust
  • Raul Brandao, because you don't have to be a great genius to write a great book, like his Humus
  • Fernando Pessoa, because the door you take to find him is also the door you take to find Portugal
  • Kafka, because he demonstrated that man is a beetle
  • Eca de Queiroz, because he taught the Portugese irony
  • Jorge Luis Borges, because he invented virtual literature
  • and Gogol, because he contemplated humanity and found it to be sad.
